Right As Rain

My name is Rainy. I'm a spectacular, big, friendly Percheron-cross gelding. I have a wonderful mind, and I'm not bad looking, either! I'm 6 years old this year, and I'm spending the summer in the mountains, where I'm learning to be a proper grown-up horse!

What is This “Work Ethic” You Speak of?

My human rode me around the yard a little yesterday evening. Well, she tried to. I was more in a mood to stand around and eat. And when I did walk around I grabbed leaves off the trees. I cooperated a little bit, but I made her work hard to get me to move at all. I’ll bet her legs are sore! She was really pleased with me when I trotted a few steps, and called it a day.

She went to a dressage show today, where the horses are really fit and full of themselves, and they actually like working. Fooey. I think she wants me to get fit now, too, so I can enjoy working more.

She stopped on the way home and bought a couple of kinds of fancy little sticks to help me get in shape. They are pretty enough, with blue and purple on them, and a wiggly piece on the end, but I don’t know if I approve. She says I can learn to move right away when she bumps me with her legs, and then I won’t have to get bumped so much, so maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

I heard there was a horse at today’s show that looked a lot like me - and he was a really fancy horse, doing fancy moves. I’m a lot bigger, so I guess that makes me even fancier! He had some spiffy braids with white tape that looked really good with his black coat and white socks. I’ll bet I’d look spectacular all braided up like that! Heck, I look pretty good even after a nice roll in the dirt.

I get to go to the next show, in a few months, just to look around and get used to the idea - no working. That might be fun.
